Stallions Begin Season With 11-1 Loss

A battle between two teams with the same win total from last season got out of hand in the season opener.

Unfortunately for the Somerset Silver Palms Stallions, they were on the wrong end.

TERRA Institute handed the Stallions an 11-1 loss in six innings to begin the season.

“I think my guys underperformed,” Somerset Silver Palms head coach Peter Cerda said. “I think we’ve got a long way to go. I expected more and we didn’t do more so I’m a little disappointed.”

Somerset Silver Palms (0-1) did not record its first hit until the fifth inning when Christian Rubio hit a one-out single to center off reliever Nico Salazar who came in for Mauro Reyes (1-0) after four no-hit innings. Max Colina knocked in the only run for the Stallions who finished with five hits.

“We have approaches to go to the opposite field and they’re not going to the opposite field,” Cerda said. “Really we got hits because the other team made mistakes and threw the ball inside. We can hit inside. We’ve got to learn how to hit outside.”

Brandon Noriega (0-1) allowed seven runs, five earned, and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.

“He missed a couple spots early and they capitalized on those missed spots, but the defense let him down,” Cerda said. “If it wasn’t for the errors he would have gave up one run in three innings.”

The Stallions finished with five errors.

William Cruz entered for Noriega and allowed three runs, two earned, and six hits in 2 2/3 innings.

TERRA (1-0) had six players with at least two hits including David Torres, who went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. University of Miami signee Daniel Labrador had two hits, including a double, and knocked in a run.

Both teams were coming off 10-win seasons in 2018.
