10 Bucs Win District Titles, Lovett to 50-0

The five-time defending state champion South Dade Buccaneers dominated the Class 3A District 16 tournament with 10 of its wrestlers winning district titles with four others advancing to regionals.

“I’m satisfied,” South Dade head coach Victor Balmeceda said. “We got all 14 through to regionals so now it’s just about moving on to the next weekend. We put 10 of our guys in a great position to do well next week.

Southridge senior 152-pounder Johnny Lovett also won a district crown improving to 50-0 as the lone undefeated wrestler in Miami-Dade County.

South Dade amassed 262.5 points to finish ahead of Southridge (175.5), Palmetto (133.5), Coral Reef (85.5), Homestead (60), and Killian (26).

“This is one of the tougher districts in the whole state,” Balmeceda said. “I know we don’t have a lot of numbers, but we have quality wrestlers.”

The Bucs’ trio of defending state champs of senior 160-pounder under Brevin Balmeceda, senior 170-pounder Todd Perry, and junior 132-pounder Bretli Reyna all won district titles in convincing fashion.

“They’re sucking it up big-time because most of our studs are beat up,” Victor Balmeceda said. “They either need surgery on some part of their body and they’re really fighting through injuries to battle for the team. For a lot of kids the season would have ended for them.”

Balmeceda needed just 35 seconds to pin Palmetto junior Charles Veliz to improve to 53-1.

South Dade also got wins from freshman 106-pounder Adrian Morales (8-1 decision), sophomore 120-pounder Adrian Neco (pin), senior 126-pounder Tyler Orta (14-5 decision), sophomore 138-pounder Joshua Swan (20-5 decision), junior 145-pounder Eric Temes (injury default), senior 220-pounder Kenneth Crouse (3-0 decision), and junior 285-pounder Tanavieus Shropshire (8-2 decision).

“I thought today was pretty good,” Orta said. “We still need to work on some things to get ready for regionals and states, but overall I think we did good.”

Lovett was in control of South Dade junior Jason Duarte from the onset on his way to a 17-7 decision improving to 50-0 after winning a state title at 53-3 last season.

“Now that I’m 50-0 it feels real good and I hope to continue and by the time I get to states I should be 60-0,” Lovett said.

Southridge senior 113-pounder Christopher Busutil (pin), Palmetto

junior 182-pounder Josh Mizelle (11-5 decision), and Southridge senior 195-pounder Zaire Terrelonge (pin) were also district champions.

Regional tournaments begin this upcoming weekend with the state

championships in Kissimmee on March 8-9.
