And we are off! Imagination!

Get ready, get set…and they are off! These words are heard many times at races. (Picture horses shooting out of the gate). It could be a foot race or a horse race. Doesn’t matter…the phrase can be used in all different

manners. Imagine that!

Today we are off after getting ready and set! We are off to a busy new year. Here we are already in the second week of January and time is flying. Imagine that.

Last week I told you about the fails and successes of Christmas gifts. Reader Patricia Kundl wrote and told me about a Hatchimal for a three-year-old girl. It was her Mr. Wonderful’s idea however she worried because it said for five and up but evidently Mr. Wonderful knew it was the perfect gift. Everyone is enjoying the Hatchimal!

Each Hatchimal comes inside a plastic egg that it has to literally hatch out of — get it? Hatchimal? (Picture an egg with a furry creature hatching from it). Cute…imagine that!

Before we know it, the horses will be coming out of the gate in Homestead. That’s right, Rodeo Days will soon be here. January 18th, 19th and 20th the cowboys will ride high on their horses and try to tame the bulls. On January 16th there will be a Little Miss and Mr. Homestead Rodeo contest at Harris Field. Little ones will don their boots and hats and strut their stuff. Meanwhile, four young ladies are vying for the title of Homestead Rodeo Queen. Based on their ticket sales, Diamond Marie Olmos, Felicity Akers, Hailey Crowley or Aracely Briana Pryor will be crowned on the 16th. On Thursday, January 17th, the Rodeo Association will hold a “Buck Off.” Yes, teens and teams can compete for prizes while riding the mechanical bull. Um…never done that one but maybe I should suggest to my co-workers that “they” should put together a team…I’m too old. (Yeah…picture me riding a mechanical bull…not pretty!). And of course, there is the big parade on Krome Avenue on Saturday. Hey…this is all next week! Imagine that!

I don’t know about you but years ago, time seemed to go really slow. I’d be waiting for Christmas and it seemed like it took forever to get here. Then it seemed a long time for Valentine’s Day and Easter to come. And oh, the summer just seemed to drag on. Now time is whizzing by so fast that I just can’t believe it. It’s become a common complaint–almost a joke–that time seems to whiz by faster and faster as we get older. According to an article in Scientific America, Psychologist William James, in his 1890 text Principles of Psychology, wrote that as we age, time seems to speed up because adulthood is accompanied by fewer and fewer memorable events. When the passage

of time is measured by “firsts” (first kiss, first day of school, first

family vacation), the lack of new experiences in adulthood, James morosely argues, causes “the days and weeks to smooth themselves out…and the years grow hollow and collapse.”

Excuse me? I beg his pardon but did that man insinuate that we are boring and experience less in our old age, so time goes quicker? (Imagine me hitting him over the head with a hammer!) No way old man! I feel that I am experiencing more firsts as I age. I experienced NASCAR from all angles at the Homestead-Miami Speedway as an old lady! Why just this past week my son gave me my first Phish shirt! I’ll explain…it is an American rock band that my son has followed since college. (Imagine me in my Phish shirt…cute right?).

Whatever the reason, time has seemed to be rapidly turning. (You know the drill…, picture a clock on the wall with the hands rapidly spinning.). No matter what, I feel that each and every one of us has a lot of new experiences, new firsts ahead. I personally am looking forward to some firsts to come to make new memories.

For example, now that I lost some weight, I want to go kayaking for the first time in my life. I also want to go deep sea fishing. I have so many new firsts that I want to experience yet in my life. OK readers…send me suggestions as to where I should go or what I should do or first-time things that you would like to try. Email or call me! Seriously. Imagine that!

So, is time flying for you? Have you been ready, set and now are off?
