Obituary - Lucille “Lucy” Smith Allen

The lovely Lucille “Lucy” Smith Allen passed away peacefully on November 14, 2018, at the age of 97.

Lucille was born in 1921 in Floyd County, Virginia. She was one of four children in a farming family. In her early

twenties she began working in the chemistry lab at Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Radford, Virginia, which was a large gun powder producer during World War II.

At the same time, around age 21, she met her heart’s match, Everett Allen, while he was in town on military leave. She faithfully wrote him as he served overseas until the end of the war. Soon after his return they were married on Valentine’s Day 1946.

She continued work at the powder plant until she was 38, when they had their first and only child, a daughter named Lisa. In 1960, when Lisa was only 6 months old, they left everything they knew in Virginia and took a chance at a job opportunity in Homestead, Florida. They adapted happily to the warm climate and had an instant love for salt water fishing. Lucille enjoyed being out on the boat, staying active in the Homestead Power Squadron Auxiliary, serving in many ministries at First Baptist Church of Homestead, and volunteering in the community. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Lucille’s family will always remember her sweet smile and good cooking, especially her holiday desserts and the many fish fries they enjoyed together.

Lucille is survived by her younger brother, Ward Smith, daughter Lisa (Gregg) Powell, grandson Dylan Powell, granddaughter Amanda (Jackson) Youngman, great granddaughter Paisley Youngman, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Lucille’s family thanks God for her blessed, long life, and will miss her always.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2018, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Homestead. Interment will be at a later date in the South Florida National Cemetery alongside her late husband Everett J. Allen.
