What a Great Weekend

My wife and I look forward to our monthly dates. With a two-year-old often they are simply relaxing afternoons sampling fantastic local food. This past Sunday, we got to try even more of it at The Rotary Club of Homestead’s Stone Crab and Seafood Festival, held at the Homestead Sports Complex.

We learned the money raised from the event is used for South Dade college scholarships, Homestead Soup Kitchen, local non-profit organizations, disabled veterans, and other beneficiaries.

So under a beautifully radiant sky, we sampled a variety of savory seafood and sweet desserts, while giving back to the community: a win-win situation!

My beautiful wife (husband points scored, yes!) in her infinite wisdom (score again!) recommended we get items of our choosing and split them, so we could try as much as possible without passing out into blissful food comas.

While all the food was terrific, we definitely had our favorites, as we imagined ourselves to be secret incognito food judges, traversing an oceanic smorgasbord.

In doing so, Key Largo Fisheries Seafood Market and Backyard Cafe floored us both with their Lobster BLT on Croissant. This is what lobster sandwiches want to be when they grow up!

Now, born and raised in New England, we both have had our share of lobster and/or lobster rolls; but this sandwich here is heavenly. We will both be back next year to this festival just to try it again, if we don’t make it down to their restaurant in Key Largo for another date night sooner.

Much as I love seafood, Key Lime Pie always follows. Key Largo Chocolates’ Key Lime Pie on a stick is now my favorite, it’s that delicious! I can only describe it as follows: take the best Key Lime Pie slice that you ever had, make it creamier than any slice has the right to be, cover it in the

lightest, yet most decadent chocolate you ever ate, and put it

on a popsicle stick. Devour as required….

Perhaps it was the afternoon date with my better half, the sun and cool temperature, or just being outside smelling all the yumminess around me, but the Stone Crab and Seafood Festival just gained two lifetime devotees and patrons.

We can’t wait until next year’s festival, hopefully we’ll see

you there too -- I’ll be the guy inhaling lobster croissants and

chocolate popsicles under a tent, as his wife smiles.

Editor’s note: Mayor Jeff Porter was quoted as he left the festival (with takeout boxes), “This was spectacular! Rotary has started something that will become Homestead’s Signature Event”.

Among the thousands that attended, most would agree, as dates are being looked at for next year.
